A change in HP’s Digital Camera Business: What it means to you - A Wetpaint WIKI: HP Community
In case you hadn’t heard, HP made an announcement yesterday regarding our digital camera business. In a nutshell, HP will continue to sell digital cameras, but they will be made by a manufacturing partner (referred to in the business as an “original equipment manufacturer, or OEM). HP will license the OEM partner to design, source, and distribute digital cameras under the HP brand starting in the first half of 2008.

Rest assured, HP is committed to digital photography and, most importantly, to our digital photography customers.

Why are we doing this?

HP wants to focus our talent and financial investment in our Print 2.0 initiatives. (You may be asking yourself, “What the heck is Print 2.0?” You can check out the official HP announcement or continue to read on for a summary.)

At the top of this page, you should see the question, “What do you have to say?” If you look to the right side of this page, you’ll see our ad with Gwen Stefani. Gwen’s projects, this digital photography blog, and this entire HP Community are dedicated to helping you answer the question, “What do you have to say?”

And that’s the essence of Print 2.0.

Print 2.0 is HP’s commitment and effort to make it easier for you to create, express, and share your stories. With Print 2.0, HP wants to do the following:

  • Make it easier to print from websites, such as blogs, news, and travel sites (see HP’s free Smart Web Printing, for example, which makes it possible to select and print only what you want, which saves ink, paper and time).
  • Make it easier for you to create and publish digital content – whether that’s improving the way you use and print digital photos (using HP’s Snapfish, for example), creating photo gifts and crafts using Activity Center templates, or simplifying the process of creating a logo or marketing materials for your business (through our free In-House Marketing templates or Logoworks by HP, for example).
  • Deliver a digital printing platform that increases print speeds and lowers the cost of printing for high-volume commercial markets (in other words, make printing better, faster, and more economical for big businesses that print a lot).

HP will continue to sell its own cameras through the holiday season, and we intend to have the OEM partnership in place during the first half of 2008.

What does this mean if you already own an HP camera?

  • There is no change to your warranty or the support HP will provide you after your purchase.
  • And there is no change to our commitment to provide great solutions for your HP digital camera -- whether that’s accessories such as batteries or photo media cards, or information, tips, and articles to help you use your camera more creatively and effectively.

If you have comments, questions, or simply want to connect, please feel free to post a comment here. We promise to read each and every thread you submit.

I look forward to talking with you,

Angela
