How to Store Digital Photos

I have a large number of photos on my external hard drive, and would like to have a copy on DVD also. In the future, I will be sure to make a DVD backup as I go, but how do I copy all of my older photos onto multiple DVDs?? ...or can it even be done, without going through them a few a time?
