Expedition Itinerary

Editor's Note: Arctic expeditions often face really tough weather, which leaves the leaders little choice but to change plans and adapt to the prevailing conditions in order to keep the team safe. Sebastian, Luc, and the team managed to make it through some tough weather, and when they veered from the original itinerary, we've noted it below.

- Luc, Flaam, Ainhoa and Mary fly into Ottawa from New York*

-Sebastian, Luc & Mary purchase pack food

-Paige arrives from Colorado with Amber, Ashley and Alexa

-Beth arrives in Iqaluit from Resolute Soper river flight grounded due to weather

- Visit Iqaluit museum*
- Visit science research center in Iqaluit*
- Team gets Parks Canada training especially in case of bear encounter!*
- Fly to Soper river at 6pm. Set up camp*

- we will paddle the Soper River that runs through Kitannilik Park, in two 6 person paddle rafts
- camping is along the river

- points of interest include: the willow forest, many water falls, lapis & mica deposits

- Paddle Soper River and set up camp by water falls*

- paddle to Soper River landing, hike 2 km to Kimmirut
- Home stay with an Inuit Family

-Team flies to Iqaluit and all but Zangrillo family fly to Resolute. Paige, Amber and Ashley will fly tomorrow due to limited seating*

- Polar Continental Shelf Project 50th Anniversary*
-Lectures and presentation at Polar Shelf Building*
- Flaam, Ainhoa, Kuria, Brian, Luc, Nicole and Sebastian are helicoptered to the Louie St Laurent Research ship for presentation by scientists*

-Twin Otter flight to Ward Hunt island is cancelled due to weather on Ellesmere*
-Visit to nearby archeological site of Thule people dwellings (600-800 years)*
-Short flight to Somerset island to watch Beluga whales arriving for their migratory two week station at Cunningham Inlet*

-Twin Otter flight to Ward Hunt island is cancelled due to weather on Ellesmere
-Sebastian gives photo workshop to the team, optimizing their HP cameras*
-Visit Yann Arthus Bertrand at neighboring hotel who gives a private glimpse of new film to team*

-Short flight to neighboring Bleechey Island to visit ill-fated camp of rescue expedition in search of North West Passage 1850’s explorer John Franklin *

-Twin Otter flight to Ward Hunt island is grounded due to fog in Resolute!*
-Presentation of Mars project by Polar Shelf scientist*
-Clearance of 4 hour flight up to Ward Hunt in the PM. Fog there will have flight diverted to Otto Fjord.
-Set up camp*

-Day-long hike to nearby glacier*

-Find boat in nearby cache. Team takes turns with rides near icebergs*
- Hike up nearby hillside for high view of the Fjord*

-Twin Otter flight to Ward Hunt postponed due to weather
- More photographing of icebergs*

-Paige and Olympia sick
-Late PM 1.5 hour flight to Ward Hunt Island to capitalize on short weather window. Two plane rotations to bring team up*

Ward Hunt Island
-Paige, Amber, Ashley, Alexa, Nicole and Olympia leave Ward Hunt and return home due to health sickness*
- Team hikes red mountain across from Walker Hill to get overview of the iceshelf. Walk on shelf south of the island *

-Team explore north west side of ice shelf. 3 hour hike to discovers sizeable system of cracks. Collect GPS coordinates and takes photographs of findings*
-Communicate data to Prof Derek Mueller*

-Mark and Kuria collect trash around the camping area from 40 years of neglect
-Scientists doing research on toxicity of abandoned army waste give team an overview of their work
-Twin Otter flight cancelled due to poor visibility on Ward Hunt

- 4 hour Twin Otter flight back to Resolute*
-Mt Barbeau plans cancelled due to Ken Borek plane charter doubts on snow conditions in the area*

-Beth leaves for Arctic Watch

- Brian, Kuria and Mark return home*
-Sebastian, Luc, Ainhoa and Matty to Radstock bay on South Devon in search for Polar Bears*
- Five mile hike to Caswall observation point on the bay*
-Evening sighting of large male on sea ice
- Set up camp*

- On the look-out for polar bears.*
- Sebastian close encounter with polar bear in sea ice*

- Morning Twin Otter pick-up and back to South Camp Inn*
- Sebastian and Luc visit Thule archeological site*
- Final packing and last day in the high Arctic*

-First Air flight to Iqaluit
-Ottawa connection* missed due to bad weather delay in Iqaluit*
-Luc, Ainhoa and Sebastian overnight in Iqaluit*

August 1

-Matty leaves for Montreal*
- Ottawa flight cancelled due to poor visibility in Iqaluit*
