Halloween Costume Time
Lisa Tucker
October 3, 2007
Well, it is the beginning of October, and we all know what that means – time to get ready for Halloween. As a non-crafty mom, this is a really difficult time of the year for me. While everyone else is frantically sewing and glue-gunning away, I’m searching around to find an inexpensive, yet creative costume that I can either purchase or put together with my limited skills. To make matters worse, my girls will likely change their minds six times about what they want to be between now and Halloween. Does anyone else have this issue?
My husband and I are also attending two Halloween costume parties this year, so we will need costumes as well. For us, I try to be creative in my costume design, using whatever materials I may have lying around the house. A couple of years ago, I used digital photography to help me in my quest for the perfect costume. Here’s what I did:
Given the fact that I waited until the night before to come up with a costume, I had to think fast. I thought a lot about what was in the news to help me come up with something. At that time ( and still today), there was a lot of news circulating around Britney/Lindsay/Paris. So I decided that I would dress as paparazzi. First, I wore a dark trench coat, and put a bunch of cameras and camera cases around my neck. I took a fedora hat and printed out a piece of paper with the word “PRESS” on it (to look like a press pass). I then downloaded a masthead from a very recognizable tabloid, and printed it on HP iron-on transfer paper and made myself a t-shirt. And finally, I went online and found a bunch of photographs taken by the paparazzi – very easy to find these days. I printed these photos out using my handy HP Photosmart 8450 printer (in 4x6 mode), and glued them all over my trench coat. And as an added touch, I blackened one of my eyes so I looked like a photographer that had gotten a little to close to one of her subjects. Viola! I was an esteemed (!) member of the paparazzi!
Does anyone have another idea for a costume that utilizes digital photography? Let me know – and, if you can give me more than one night to put it together, that would be a big bonus!
