Marcy's Quilt Project

I want to use my children's artwork —scan them into my all-in-one printer and then print them out on fabric to make a quilt.

An update on the quilt. It is almost done! Pictured here is how I am knotting the squares together in rows. Then I will knot each row to the next.

This is a photo of Tyla's drawings after they have been transferred onto the Colorfast fabric. This I anticipated to be a major hurdle for me. It really was easy. I made sure that the colors were the intensity that I wanted on plain paper before I printed them on the fabric. I peeled the paper off, rinsed and ironed. It was not difficult at all.

Next step, sew those squares onto the larger squares of white fleece. Then I will start cutting the fringe for knotting the squares together.Marcy's Quilt project

Ok, so this is what I have planned so far:

1. Decided on new art work so I won't have to re-size old art.
2. Bought two new children's "how to" drawing books so there would be something new and exciting for my daughter to work with.Marcy's dream project - update - Tag Team Web 1.9
3. Found out that the size of the fabric sheets are, 8 1/2" x 11". In order for the quilt square with the drawing on it to be a square with some extra fabric for a hem allowance or decorative border, I concluded that the drawing must be in a 7 1/2" square.
4. Made a template of a 7 1/2" square with a piece of card stock so I could trace the drawing area onto as many plain white sheets of paper as my daughter needs, and would be able to erase that line when it came time to scan and copy it onto the fabric sheets. 5. Drew and colored several quilt ideas using graph paper to come up with a pattern that was pleasing to the eye. Marcy's dream project - update - Tag Team Web 1.9
6. Decided on a fabric. I had made a flannel quilt to honor the birth of my second daughter, and she prefers, of course, any other fleece blanket over the one that I spent a year's worth of free time making. I am taking that to heart and working with what the kids like: FLEECE.
7. I took my daughter to the fabric store and let her pick out two coordinating prints. I guided the choices as far as saying that the border fabric could be busy and colorful but the inner squares would need to be a little more subtle so that it would not take away from her artwork visually. I also picked a white fleece to sew the artwork fabric sheets onto. I thought it would help blend the fabric sheets in nicely. We had fun picking out the fabrics together.
8. I will sew the fabric sheet which will be no more than 8 1/2" ( less if I hem the edges ) on top of another larger fabric square which will be approximately a 15" square. I know that sounds really large for a quilt square, but I am going to cut 3 1/4" cuts at even intervals around the perimeter of each 15" square and then instead of sewing the squares together we will tie knots to assemble the quilt squares.

I am considering different ideas for finishing off the outside edge of the quilt, but I have plenty of time for that.

*There is an option with the fabric sheets to have white or cream. I am choosing the white so that even the lighter colors in the drawings will show through clearly.

It might be difficult to understand, but I will take plenty of photos and keep you posted on my progress along the way.

Wish me luck,
Marcy

Now that the Holidays are over I have found some moments to think about the quilt again. I actually put it on my daily to do list. That got me going.

For some strange reason I find it easier to make my own pattern than to follow one that I bought from a store. Since I have never done anything quite like this project, I am considering it experimental. I am not going to get crazy serious about it. I want it to be fun and easy and if it is a huge success it will lead to more. That idea relaxed me.

My starting point for this project became about the size of the fabric sheets so I would know what size to have my daughter draw her pictures. I thought that would be easier than trying to enlarge, reduce or crop earlier drawings. That was the first big decision. New drawings.

I brainstormed a totally kid friendly way to make this quilt, and it is going to be an almost no sew project. I am looking forward to sharing my love of crafting with my daughter. The finished product will be a gift that she will treasure forever and remind her of wonderful memories of sharing time with me.

When thinking about starting my dream project, I find making the initial jump into it a little overwhelming. Big projects always seem that way to me. Then I have to remind myself to think of it as not one big project but many little ones. So with that thought in mind I am led to my first step or first little project .... selecting the art work. So many wonderful pieces to chose from. Something old? Something new? Or do I wait to see what my daughter might produce in the near future? This part could involve a new series of artwork to be commissioned. If I do that I could brainstorm with my daughter regarding the theme. That could be an interesting place to begin.
