With two kids, ages 7 and 11, we attend a lot of birthday parties. My older daughter, Chloe, attended a party this weekend, which got me thinking about how digital photography has really raised the bar on kids' parties over the years.

I remember the first time, several years ago, when I used digital photography at one of my girls’ parties. I took one photo of each child with the birthday girl at the beginning of the party. Then as the kids played outside, I set up my trusty HP compact printer on the picnic table, and started printing out the photos. By the time the party was over, I was able to present each parent with a photograph of their child as a souvenir. The parents and kids loved it! They thought I was so amazing! So crafty! So innovative! I did lots of demos of my hp camera
and printer that day – and could probably be credited with selling a few.

That was then.Today’s parties go way beyond that.A simple photograph given out at the end of a party wouldn’t amaze anyone today. Probably no one would ask for a demo, or call me innovative. My once-fabulous idea of giving parents a photograph of their child at the party is now just a party basic. Nowadays people are doing so much more – sending out customized invitations, giving out framed photos, using photo wrapping paper and sometimes even presenting party-goers with a Snapfish photo book containing party photos a week or so after the event. All this innovation is making my job as a cutting-edge mom that much harder.

Fortunately, the HP Activity Center has a ton of ideas for making kids’ parties special. The crafts they showcase are usually pretty simple and don’t require that much skill, which is good, because honestly, I don’t have a crafty bone in my body. I also don’t have much time on my hands, so I need something I can do fast.

Here’s my question - does anyone else have (easy) ideas on how to use digital photography to make parties special? Has anyone done something new and exciting that I can steal and call my own?

Why not make the party about taking pictures and then seeing their own work. Kids love to take pictures. Take them somewhere fun, perhaps give them a photo scavenger hunt list of things you know they can get pics of and let them sort of loose. They could bring their own cameras or you could provide them.

Lisa, I love it! A friend introduced me to a great tool called SendOutCards. With it, I can send out custom invitations, postcards, and greeting cards with photos and graphics for each kid for about a dollar a card, and the company does all the work! They print the cards, address the envelopes, put a stamp on them and fire em out! I can then use the same system to send thank you cards. It is the easiest thing in the world and fun! I don't have a lot of time either, but this is too cool! If you want, you can send a couple cards out on my dime. Just go to www.SendOutCards.com/TryMeFree And you are welcome to call the idea your own too! I wont tell anyone!
