Ready, set, go!

When starting a screenplay, what is the first thing you would think that a person needs? A theme? Characters? A plot? Those are all important, I'm sure, but I discovered an even more immediate need- office supplies. Lots and lots of office supplies.
I'll be the first to admit that I have a fondness for notebooks. And pens. And occasionally file folders. Those who know me best might even call it an obession, but when I walked past the bookshelf filled with half-empty notepads on my way to Office Depot I felt very justified in making some new purchases. Writing a script is a big undertaking, and while a better person might focus on emotionally preparing for what is sure to be a mentally draining process, I decided instead to stock up on expendables. Writing is about making choices- that was my first one.
So, now I have notebooks of all kinds. There are full-sized ones on my desk and on the kitchen table. There is a composition book on my night stand and a tiny flip pad that fits in my back pocket for when I am out and about. These notebooks obviously also required pens in a variety colors and sizes so I bought an assortment of those as well. Now, whenever and wherever inspiration strikes, I am fully prepared to capture it.
You hear that, Inspiration? I'm ready! Come and get me (please).
