More Truth about Print and Prosper's Cost of Ink Claims

I invite you to learn more about the value of HP ink and printers, and get the uncolored truth about savings.

April 3, 2009
The Truth about Print and Prosper Cost of Ink Claims (first published on the HP Inkjet Printing Blog)

I've been watching the Kodak Print and Prosper ad campaign unfold during the past few days. In one commercial, it stated that "The world's most expensive liquid isn't found in the Middle East" -- a playful jab at the rising cost of oil, but an unfair swipe thrown at competitors regarding the cost of ink. I couldn't help but set the record straight from my perspective.
  1. We've been down this road before, and it's very misleading.
Don't take it from me, see what PC Magazine, PC World, Engadget, and others had to say about this cost of ink hype (it earned a "Worst of 2007" label from PC Mag).
  2. Do the math.
Milk is more expensive per gallon than crude oil. So is bottled water. I personally understand that I pay for quality when I buy a cartridge that delivers up to 72.9 million possible color combinations and can deliver photo prints that last for more than 100 years.
  3. Times are tough. We can help.
No gimmicks here. We understand that for many customers cost per page is a serious purchase consideration. Our take is you should score some serious savings without sacrificing our legendary print-at-home quality. That's why last year HP introduced XL cartridges, Ink Combo Packs and Photo Value Packs. (You can go here to learn more about easy ways to save money and continue to get lab-quality prints at home. ) In addition, we've made it simple for you to access literally hundreds of free printing projects you can customize and print at home - whether you need a greeting card and calendar or a professionally designed flyer or a full-blown marketing kit for your small business, you'll find it at the HP Creative Studio.
For 25 years, HP's been proud to deliver leading innovation, unparalleled customer support, and to be the top-ranked printing brand in the industry according to customers and media alike. We'll keep working hard every day to bring you the quality, value, and reliability you expect from us -- today, tomorrow, and for a long time to come. Got a question or comment? I invite you to send it my way.

A Special Savings for You, and Last-Minute Gifts You Can Print at Home

Are you ready for the holidays? I still have A LOT of holiday prep work to do and just a few days and even fewer dollars left to get it done! I know many members feel the same way. So let's see how the HP Holiday Elf can help in three easy steps.

1. Grab special savings to make a good deal even better!
Visit the HP Deals page and get a $25 savings certificate good toward any HP Inkjet printer priced $149 or above.
The HP Community Wiki Blog - The HP Community Wiki
This mail-in offer may be combined with any other HP national or reseller discounts for huge savings. You can shop and buy online or in-store from ANY authorized HP reseller.
(FYI: I've been able to find deals and combinations that would take the price of a $360 printer down to $95.).

Go for it. Grab the rebate, find a good deal, and make it even better. Share the offer with your friends and family who want to start printing wirelessly from almost any room in the house. But hurry: The deal is good only as long as supplies last or through January 4, 2009.

2) Last-minute gifts you can print at home
It's a bit of a family tradition to bring home holiday strays, and I want everyone to have something special under the tree (without breaking the bank). So I make a bunch of extra gifts using my home printer. You can, too, and many in 15 minutes or less!

Free and low-cost Holiday gift ideas -- Tips for heartfelt presents without sacrificing bling!

I hear it from my family and my friends. I read it in other blogs, tweets and communities.
"Money is tight."
"I need gift ideas."
"What can I make at home instead of buying something in the store?"

Check out these DIY gift ideas:

  • At Angry Chicken, you'll find fabric crafts, a section on aprons, arty stuff, recipes, toys, and tutorials.

  • Its About Babies Gift Tags from Fog and ThistleOur old friends at Craftzine pump out a continuous feed of DIY crafts and projects, including creations from other bloggers and communities.

Craftzine helped me find these downloadable gift tags by Fog and Thistle Cut Paper Art by Rachel Weber (pictured at left).

Rachel also sells her cut paper art, some of which can be had for as little as $2! Imagine that! You can give beautiful, handmade art (that I know I'd be proud to hang on a wall) for less than the cost of a double latte.

  • And my new passion: Embellishing free print projects and low-cost gifts to create one-of-a-kind treasures for my family and friendsI use bling such as these bejeweled brads from Bella Art online to dress up cards and invitations I print at home..
I download cards, invitations and more from the HP Creative Studio, HP Activity Center, and other blogs and communities like those mentioned above.

I print at home using "best" quality on my HP printer settings, then I embellish with scrapbooking accessories, such as ribbon, dew drops, raised letters and more.

I bought a boatload of bling from Bella Art Online for less than I'd spend on two pizzas, and I bet the batch will easily help me beautify 20-25 cards, 15 invitations, and about 10 low-cost gifts I'll be sharing with coworkers. Check out my friend MaryAnn's video for ideas.

  • Got a tip or gift idea? Please share it here or in our community's discussion forum.

Passionate about Politics? This Tuesday, Toast or Taunt ...

Toast or Taunt your Friends with Election Day Cards from the HP Creative StudioI don't consider myself to be a "politico". (1. I'm not smart enough. 2. I'm self-aware enough to know I couldn't take the criticism.) But I do care passionately about this country.

Therefore, I vote. I discuss and debate policy and philosophy with family and friends. We agree on some things, and we disagree on others.

I KNOW we all agree on one thing for sure:
Regardless of political party, we respect each other's right to have and share an opinion.

But that doesn't mean I won't poke fun at the whole process. I will and I do -- by sharing Election Greeting Cards from the HP Creative Studio. You, too, can toast or taunt your friends with three different options you can print at home.

Get serious and vote this coming Tuesday. Then lighten up and share a laugh.

Boo! Make your Halloween spooktacular with the HP Creative Studio

[Update, Nov.1: See my family's Halloween pumpkins and decorations in the Going Wild with Pumpkins Gallery. Add your photos, too!]

I love Halloween. Believe it or not, "love" is an understatement. I just get so excited about making spooky decorations, carving pumpkins and pulling together my costume. (And yes, last year I was one of only a few people who actually donned a costume AND went into the office. Call me "crazy", but security was not amused when I explained that pirates always carry a sword.)

This year, decorating the house and carving the pumpkins is gonna be a lot easier thanks to the HP Creative Studio. Check out the following free projects you can download and print at home:

Odds and ends and little ideas that give me creative hope

So I've talked about how I aspire to be creative with paper, fabric, photos, and more. HP makes it easier for people like me (calling me a "newbie" crafter is an understatement) to be creative with the Print Studio and the Activity Center, but I still dream about doing more, especially when I see all the cool stuff that other members are sharing here:

And I get inspired when I visit other sites, too. Have you checked out these Wikis, blogs and websites?
Again, thanks for sharing. Keep the ideas and the encouragement coming!

Fast, free, and fun? Fabulous!

A couple of weeks ago, we ran a poll to ask you what free projects you'd like HP and the community to share (see below -- you can still vote!). Thank you for telling us what you want and for sharing your opinions about other ways we can improve the HP Community Wiki.

In a nutshell, you've asked for more photo projects, more 15-minute projects, and more scrapbooking projects that you can print at home. Our answer: Done. Done. And done. (Plus, some toys and iron-ons.) And much more to come!

HP Print Studio Photo Frame Montage -- it's free and easy to make. Plus, see 15 other photo frames you can print at home.Because when it comes to fast, fun and free -- or deals -- from HP, I am all about sharing it with my friends (especially you folks reading this, and by extension your friends, too.) And that includes my latest 15-minute project -- a custom photo montage that I made with the HP Print Studio and my own vacation photos from last year.

Did you know that with the HP Print Studio, you can create all this stuff?
HP Print Studio Photo Frames
  • Calendars
  • Greeting cards
  • Iron-ons

Kids who inspire: The Young Arctic Ambassadors

The HP Community Wiki Blog - The HP Community WikiWhen I was 9, I wasn't thinking about how to save the world's climate (most likely, I was thinking about how to save my place in line when the ice cream truck turned onto our street).

But HP has the privilege of sponsoring a group of kids who are right now treking their way North into the Arctic Circle to help save our planet from its climate crisis.

Meet the Young Arctic Ambassadors -- nine kids, ranging in age from 9 years old to 16 years old, who've come together from all over the world, including Kenya, Italy, France, and North America.
They've joined award-winning photographer Sebastian Copeland, team leader and explorer Luc Hardy and others to make a life-changing expedition in the hopes of changing the world's behavior.

The HP Community Wiki Blog - The HP Community Wiki

I invite you to learn about their mission, see the expedition photos, and follow their expedition's blog (and perhaps leave them a comment, a cheer, or share how you too can go green?)

    They've inspired me.

I hope they inspire the best in you, too.

Take charge: Pick what free projects come next!

Help me help you! Vote in our poll, and tell me what you want next from HP. Whether it's a stack of 15-minute printing projects, or toys and puzzles for the kids, or new ideas on how to showcase your digital photography by printing at home, we want to give it to you!

And to those of you who've taken the time to send me an email or compliment -- thank you! I love reading your messages and ideas. And I hope you'll share more of your thoughts and creative printing projects with the entire community, too.

I look forward to seeing your top picks for what projects will come next ...

Get out of jpeg jail: print and share your digital photos

    PW's Charlie Dog
I'm guilty. I admit it. I have lots of photos currently locked up in what I call "jpeg jail". They're stuck on my camera or in a folder on my laptop.

I need to liberate them. I need to print them. I need to share them with others.

I mean, look at this face. Can you imagine this poor pup being locked up on a memory card? I can't either. Thank goodness Pioneer Woman posted this photo to the Wiki for all of us to download, print, and share . (In addition to her free photos, Pioneer Woman also shares lots of recipes (try the Marlboro Man Sandwich and the Apple Dumplings...yum!) and photo projects on the HP Wiki.

And if you haven't seen her award-winning blog, thepioneerwoman.com, go check it out. You'llbe in for some laughs, some amazing photography, and you might just find a little bit of yourself in the housewife who lives on a ranch, is raising four kids, and channels Ethel Merman and Lucille Ball.

I'm off to print some photos...Yee-haw!

Print-at-home cards for dads and grads Father's Day Creative Projects

As much as I love searching aisle after aisle, row after row for the perfect greeting card, I don’t always find something that looks and reads just right. Afterall, when someone is special to my heart, I want the card to be unique, too. And if I don’t find it, I leave the store empty-handed.

To be perfectly frank, it’s the rare occasion that I add “greeting card” to my shopping list these days. Thanks to the HP Activity Center, the cards I print at home rival anything I pay $3.99 for at the local drugstore. Plus, my cards get custom messages, or treasured photos, and a personal touch that just can’t be found on the shelf.

My friends and family tell me they’re “keepers”, which is all the confirmation I need to make this a new tradition. So for this Father’s Day and the upcoming June graduations, I’ll be using the latest additions to the Activity Center. You can, too.

For dads, try printing these gift ideas and cards:
» Father's Day Gift Coupon -- see how to make it
    » Father's Day photo card
    » Father's Day Iron-ons
    » See more projects
» Add your project to the Father's Day Gallery

To help your graduate celebrate, you can print these at home:
    » Graduation party kit
    » Graduation invite
    » Graduation cards and thank-yous
    » Get more projects

PS: If you need a gift idea, you can save up to 50 percent on HP printers and all-in-ones at HP.com.

What do you want to see, do, watch, learn, or change?

I started a thread last week: Tell us how we can make this community better.

Haven't received a comment yet. Not one suggestion. Not one complaint.

And I'm quite sure that has more to do with the time required to make suggestions than it does that there aren't any suggestions for improvements. (Afterall, my list of ideas and wants is about as long as my arm.)

So let me make it easier for you to send a message anonymously: Please vote in the poll to the right.

Got something more specific to suggest?

Please share it here or in our discussion forum. Chances are someone else in the community would like to add or change the same thing, and we'd really appreciate hearing it from you directly.

Either way, I hope you make your voice heard. And I'll be sure to share the results -- both here and in updated pages on the HP Community Wiki.

    Thanks!

    Go green with HP!

Earth Day is just 2 weeks away (Tuesday, April 22nd). But you don’t have to wait to do something good for our environment. You can start today and have fun and feel good about doing it.

    Earth-friendly Crafts
For example, use your creative skills to make Earth-friendly crafts that encourage green-living and recycling all year ‘round.

I'd also like to share these eco-friendly tips and HP environmental programs that you can take advantage of -- you don't have to be an HP customer or own an HP product to do so. (Most of this info has been previously published on HP.com.)

    Re-use equipment
You can also make a difference by encouraging re-use of your used equipment (be sure to take action and protect your personal identity first):
    • If you recently upgraded to a new printer or computer, give your used equipment to your kids or another family member
    • Check with local schools and non-profit organizations to see if they accept technology donations
    • Sell your old equipment – to a neighbor, through classifieds, or online venues such as Ebay

Recycle ink cartridges, printers and more

If you can’t re-use or sell your equipment, recycle it.
    • HP offers free HP inkjet or LaserJet cartridge recycling. Check inside cartridge boxes for return materials (available for some products and countries). Simply place the empty cartridge in the postage-paid envelope provided and mail back to HP
    • HP’s Planet Partners program accepts all brands of computing, printing, and multifunction hardware for recycling

    CD photo album

The HP Community Wiki Blog - Crafts, ideas and print projects
    Ink cartridge recycling
HP recently reached its goal to recycle 1 billion pounds of printer and computer hardware. To learn more about how you can partner with HP to help us recycle 2 billion pounds by 2010 and save energy with your technology purchases, visit HP’s Global Citizenship report on product re-use and recycling.

Why the HP Activity Center and your ideas inspire me

I love the HP Activity Center. It makes crafts possible for someone like me.

    • My grandmother, at age 87, still knits and crochets.
    • My mother sews (and handmade most of my grade school wardrobe).
    • My first sister makes gift baskets (for what seems like every celebrity with a condo in Palm Springs).
    • My second sister, knits, crochets, quilts, and makes scrapbooks. (The list goes on. If we captured her life in a brag book, I'd go broke buying extra scrapbook pages from Michael's.)
    • My youngest sister has four kids and will eventually find time to craft when the youngest goes off to school. That said, she's very creative and has made some amazing photo albums and has decorated two homes.

Then there's me. I didn't get what I call the family "make" gene.

I am not exaggerating when I tell you that for years I thought I was a gypsy child adopted into my family. For example, while my sisters and mom receive "oohs" and "aahs" for wrapping their Christmas gifts with handmade bows and what seemed to me to be laser-cut paper and machine-precision folds, my gift-wrapped packages only needed the "to" line completed on the gift tag -- only Angela could make a package look like it was wrapped by the family dog, so putting my name next to "from" wasn't necessary. I swear.

Thank goodness for gift bags. They've saved me from ongoing humiliation.

For the past 2 years, the HP Activity Center has been my gift-bag equivalent for crafts. With projects ranging from easy print-and-go cards, books, and more to advanced digital scrapbooking that allow imaginative embellishments, even I can create crafts!

And now I have a new resource: this community. Your discussions, your tips, your crafts, your project ideas and your presence shared here in the HP Community Wiki is my new ongoing inspiration list -- a daily webinar of creative expression.

Thanks for sharing! I now have a healthy outlet for my craft envy.

PS: I invite you to share your ideas on how we can make this community better. Please add your thoughts to a new thread in the discussion forum.

    April 2, 2008
    Inspiration is everywhere

I've led an amazing life. (Actually, my life is quite similar to most people I know: I work and get a paycheck. I have bills that need to be paid. I have a family. The cats need to be fed. I need to eat less ice cream and instead be on a first-name basis with my treadmill. That kind of stuff...)

The "amazing" part of my life can be summarized this way:
    • I've been fortunate enough to travel to Europe, Asia and all over the United States, but home is still my favorite place to be.
    • I communicate for a living, but I learn something new about storytelling every day.
    • I've learned that "culture" is open to interpretation if you have an open mind.
    • I've met some incredibly talented people along the way.
    • People are more likely to be kind than not.
    • People will share their experience, their expertise, and their happiness if you let them.

And I suppose that's I why I find that life is amazing -- because for me, inspiration lives in everyday life and everyday people.
And it's why I especially find inspiration here in this community.
    Thanks for your kindness.
Thanks for your crafts, your photos, your thoughts.
    Thanks for sharing.
    You make amazing possible.
