Using Big Prints at Big Events

If you have a big event coming up (Parent’s 50th anniversary? Friend’s 40th birthday?), here’s a way to use posters to really add some fun.
For my mom’s 70th birthday party I wanted to do something special, but frankly my mom has everything and I don’t really have a way with centerpieces … so, I decided to create posters to hang on the walls. (Back to my 36GB of photos!). I thought it would be a fun way to decorate (Wild West theme), but what it really did was provide a fabulous ice breaker to the start of the party. The guests crowded around the posters and really enjoyed seeing my mom in each “stage” of her life (can you say “bouffant”?).

There is an easier way to do this now with HP’s retail photo products (please visit www.hp.com/go/retailphotosolutions to see if there is a location near you, and look for the "collage poster" option). Because I didn’t have an HP retail photo solution in my area at the time, I created my own. I grouped my photos into “phases”, created a collage on my PC (I used Microsoft Digital Imaging Suite, but many of the software programs can do this), and then saved the entire collage as a .jpg. I ended up with 7 posters, or .jpg files. I then uploaded these to my Snapfish account and ordered 30”x40” posters. They were surprisingly high quality even though the photos were old and blown up fairly large. (And remember, my standards are high since I work at HP).
I ended up mounting these “Wanted” posters on foam core and hanging them on the wall with twine (playing into the western theme). My mom was so delighted by them she took them to be remounted, and now they hang in her garage. (This sounds like a dis, but if you saw my Mom’s garage you’d know this is a place of honor).

I have used this idea for years (with hands, scissors, paste, ruler, stencils and time, now with all the tools available from HP, we do not have to do all the work.. most of the work has been done for us.. we just turn on the computer add our photos and LOVE! Presto we will have flyers, banners, invitations.. thanks so much for the refresher of my memory!
