Using Your Camera's Manual Features - Expression Center

Using Your Camera's Manual Features - Expression CenterAre you struggling to understand all the manual controls in your camera? What is aperture? Depth of field? ISO? White balance? I struggled with these controls too! I knew cameras wouldn't have these controls if they weren’t useful, but I certainly didn’t understand what to do with them. As a result of managing HP’s Digital Photography Center, I’ve learned a lot about these controls and how best to use them. I also learned that it was difficult to find easy to understand explanations of these controls on the web. Most of the information I found took a long time to read and was very technical and hard to understand. I wanted to create something that would explain these controls for the beginner – something that was easy to follow and was interactive and visual.

As a result my team created two learning tools to help.

First, here is our demo: Beyond Auto Mode: Using your camera’s manual controls

Try it out and let me know your thoughts. I admit, it wasn’t easy to visually explain in this demo how manual controls can benefit your photos. Tell us how we did and what you think we could improve. And by all means, if you learned something new that helps your photography skills, I’d love to hear about it.

We also developed an online class, “Beyond auto mode: understand and use your camera's settings.” The class is part of our Digital Photography learning center, which allows for more in-depth information in a self-paced format with an instructor on-hand for questions. The class first ran in July and it immediately filled to capacity. This confirmed my belief that people want to learn more about their cameras. The class is running again in October, so if you are interested, check out the classes we run each month and watch for registration to open.
