| Expedition leader Luc Hardy says: "There is energy in this expedition, nine young adults from different parts of the world coming together to witness. I ask myself what exactly does the word wtness mean – to observe something with your own eyes and to meld what is seen to the personal experience of the individual? Is this why we can all see the same thing yet describe the experience with unique points of view? Nine young adults with nine sets of eyes, all here to witness the Arctic and bring back to their communities personal versions of what we’ve seen. This is the wonder that I see...!" |

| Beth, age 15, Inuk See my expedition blog In her words: “I turn 15, in about five months! I wish I can take some sun. I am from Resolute (75º North) . Just graduated from my school. I will now go finish school outside of Ottawa. I just left Resolute--it was nice and hot and sunny the week before I left but the morning I left was really raining, so I just left in time! Both of my parents are in Resolute Bay. Last school year, I just left Nunavut! :(I guess it was okay. I got many friends in the end, so it was really good.) I am adopted to my grandparents, in my biological family I have 1 younger sister, 2 older brother and a sister. In my adopted family I have 1 older brother and 3 older sisters. Yeh, all together I have a big family and they all live in Resolute, except for one of my brothers.” “ I am 14 years old. Though I live in Nunavut, I spent the past year at Sedbergh, a boarding school located in Montebello, Quebec. I love the outdoors and this year completed a ski marathon at my school. I also participated in Rugby and soccer. Both of these sports are seldom available in Nunavut. Last year, I went to school in Iqaluit, during that time I was a member of the Air Cadets and participated in a biathlon in Whitehorse, Yukon where I won a silver medal in her age group. I just recently went camping with my family at Eleanor Lake about 50 miles north of Resolute Bay.” | |
| Flaam, age 16, France My expedition blog At 16, Flaam is the eldest of two daughters. She is bi-lingual in French and English and lives in Greenwich Connecticut. She loves to rock climb. Her main school interest is in biology. She is a soprano and sings in choir. She has extensive travel experience and has been to Ethiopia, Vietnam, Cuba, Bolivia among others. She developed a keen interest in climate change, and is interested in learning more after her trip to Greenland last year. In her words: “I was born and live in Greenwich, Connecticut. It's great because we live by the ocean and at the same time only one hour away from New York City, where I go as often as I can. My sister Ainhoa is 14 and will take part in this expedition with me. I turned 17in two weeks and next year will be a senior in high school at the French-American School of New York. Although I'm not sure which college I would like to apply to, I would love to study biology, environmental sciences and psychology. I'm bilingual in French and English and am learning Spanish. I hope to study abroad in either Spain or Argentina to become fluent! I started rock climbing 3 years ago. I climb indoors with other teenagers but have been climbing outdoors as well (at the Gunks north of New York). I climb around 5.12s if that means anything to you. When I was 14, I passed my PADI diving license and since then I dive whenever given the chance (though I do not plan on diving in the artic ;)) A couple summers ago, I toured England and Scotland with my choir. Our family loves to travel and we have been to Ethiopia, Vietnam, Cuba, Bolivia to name a few. Not only has traveling offered amazing experiences but it has also helped develop my passion for photography. I was first introduced to climate change by my father on our trip to Greenland in June 2007. I am looking forward to this trip to develop my knowledge about the changing conditions of our earth. We are planning to study the cracks in the northernmost ice-shelf of the Canadian Arctic which should be really exciting.” | |
| Ainhoa, age 14, France Follow my expedition blog Plays the Piano and violin. Took up Rugby in school last year! Likes Art classes more than math, English. Likes to cook, especially bake. Has a cockatiel named Cuicui. Climbed Kilimanjaro over 1 ½ week when she was12. In her words: “I’m Ainhoa and I turned 14 on April 11th. I will be entering 9th grade in the fall at the French-American School of New York, a bi-lingual school outside of New York. I began playing both the piano and violin when I was 6 and I still spend a lot of time playing today. I learn mostly classical music with my teacher but I love to play pieces from the Beatles, Billy Joel etc. This year played basketball for my school and also started rugby. They play a lot in France, the world cup was held there last year. It’s a hard sport but a lot of fun! At school, I mostly like art class, I love to paint (I find it a lot more fun then math and physics ;) ). I enjoy cooking, especially baking deserts (all sorts of chocolate cakes, cookies). In February 2007, when I was 12, I climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania with my sister and father over 2 weeks. The climb took a huge amount of effort and was very demanding, both physically and mentally. I was so proud when I got to the top and finally saw the sunrise. I am glad to say I climbed one of the seven summits! The best reward was that we raised over $10,000 for the Save Darfur Organization at the same time! Every summer I spend a month in France to visit my family. We spend time horseback riding, swimming at the beach in St Malo, or shopping in Paris. I also sing soprano in a choir with my sister and I’ve been in a few school plays. I hope that one day I will be able to be on Broadway!” | |

| Ashley, age 13, U.S.A. Dear journal... Ashley has three sisters, also coming on this trip. She is an avid horse back rider, who has won may ribbons. She loves to surf with her mom and dad; she skis and has participated in field trips centered around climate change. She is methodical, caring, and fun loving. In her words: “My name is Ashley and I live in Woodside, California. I am 11 years old. I love to ride horses, play basketball, ice skate, play soccer, surf, wake board, high jump, and ski. I also play the piano and viola. I have been show jumping since I was in kindergarten and train 5 days a week. I enjoy all sports, but riding is my favorite! I competed in the top ten finals in California as a Hunter/Jumper. My horse’s name is “Mindy”. She is the best! I am very excited to go to the Arctic. I love to travel. One of my favorite trips is when my parents took our family to Africa. I love to seeing the wildlife and living in the bush. At the beginning of 5th grade, I wrote a poem titled “I Am Green”. I was inspired after watching “The 11th Hour”. This film had a huge impact on me and made me realize how serious the things we do effect out planet. Ever since then, I have continued learning about how our planet is changing and what we can do to help. I share information with my friends and family and make changes in our daily life. Sometimes I make my mother crazy because I always let her know when she can do something different to save the environment. She now makes us “laptop” lunches with reusable items and sometimes we walk to school.” I Am Green I am a nice girl who is going to save the earth and environment from Global Warming. I wonder if we all helped in Global Warming the Earth would be a better and happier place to live in. I hear Mother Nature telling us that Global Warming can destroy our world; she wants us all to HELP! This is the “The 11th Hour!” I see the near future and I see bad things waiting to happen! I want everyone to pitch all around so our Earth will be saved!!J I am a nice girl who is going to save the Earth and environment from Global Warming! I pretend that all of this never happened to us. I feel that one day this problem will be fixed. I touch the hurt planet trying to recover from this horrible disaster! I worry that nobody will help our injured Earth and humans will be extinct one day. I wonder if we will be able to save the polar bears and why people don’t seem to care. I cry because I don’t want the wonderful Earth to be destroyed. I am a nice girl who is going to save the Earth and environment from Global Warming. | |
