type of paper to use for a calendar with pics
Dec 31 2008, 12:21 PM EST
I make a monthly calendar with pictures on top and the month on the bottom, so it's 2 sided. I went to get it binded and while I waited I looked at Staples calendars(to be printed). I just loved the weight and look of the paper they use. They wouldn't tell me anything about it. I have always used 67lb card stock which isn't very good for picture quality but the ink doesn't show thru from side to side. Now I want to find the right kind of paper or better paper to use to make my calendars better.

I do these every year for my family... I make family calendars. Print calendar on one side and pics on the other. STAPLES sells their own brand of "Photo Supreme double sided matte paper. It works great. I just bought the package of 100 sheets for about $21. They have a 50 sheet pack but I needed the larger one. I print the paper and then I have my own binding machine but I am sure you can get them to punch holes pretty reasonable. Hope this helps....note- the first year I made these, I gave my brother his at breakfast in a restaurant and the lady at the next table asked me what company made it for me. I was so proud to tell her that I made it myself...

Thank you very much for the info. I checked online but they only had the 50pk.and no weight listed. So I will check in the store. I will have to remember to look for the double sided because the other photo paper has writing on the back. I am anxious to making them better. I always like to improve if I can. I might check into doing the binding myself , is that expensive or/and hard? Happy New Year

Very easy. I purchased my machine a few years ago on Ebay. I only paid $30 for it. I didn't want to spend a fortune on the calendars. I have also used it for family cookbook. I also lend it to my best friend for her calendars. So it has paid for itself already. I get the spiral binding at Staples.

wow, there are a lot of binding machines out there. Could you tell me a little about yours? What made you decide to go with that one? I know nothing about a binding machine. I always had staples do mine but I could save some if I did them myself, I do 14 a year and the family is getting bigger. I guess I am going to have to do some research on binding machines.

It's a GBC. Its not electronic, it has a lever you push down to punch the holes... I love it.

I would like to use a glossy paper for my calender pictures. Epson Glossy Photo used to work great, but they changed it and I can no longer print the calender on the back. Does anyone know of a glossy paper that allows clear printing on the reverse side? I've tried several from HP, Canon, Office Depot, and Ilford, but none will work.

You might try glossy brochure paper - it is made to print two sides.

Actually, I found that Office Depot has a paper called Multi-project Photo Paper that is glossy on one side and matte on the back (with no logo) that allows clear printing on both sides. You have to special order it and the letter size only comes in 200 count. It is 9 mil but only medium weight, but is adequate (considering the lack of alternatives).
