Creating Family Cookbook
Jan 12 2009, 1:20 PM EST
I learned many things the hard way in creating my family cookbooks. I can offer suggestions on where I went wrong before you start. To Begin: Keep all your work in one place - use a large notebook for all your writing of family recipes, notes, ideas. On your desktop, make a folder and gather all cooking clipart you'd like to use throughout your cookbook there; when your looking for clipart, you don't want to hunt all through your computer for it. I spent time online searching for free clipart to use and saved it there. Actual photo's of the recipe are great to use also. You might even be able to ask relatives that are offering family recipes to take photo's of themselves baking for your pages. I used a lot of old family pictures for my pages. Write out names for your cookbook - when the right one comes along, you'll know it. Visit relatives and talk cooking. Ask to see their recipe boxes - scan some of the old recieps to use as clip art or possibly for the front cover. Look at other family recipe books online to get ideas for your front cover. Play with colors to see what colors you want your cookbook to be. If you print at home, remember color runs, but black usually doesn't. Don't use too many fonts on the pages - it's best to pick two fonts and stick with them throught your book. I added family memories to each page of my recipes - I sometimes added memories of more than one person and listed their name by their family memories. Always back up your work somewhere - I'm very careful about saving my books I'm working on. I can't even imagine losing my files of all that hard work. Send out letters to relatives near and far, tell them of your plan and ask for recipes, stories, ideas, and photo's. You never know what kind of photo they just might have that would be perfect for your book. And, have fun with making a recipe book. Everyone will love it, and want a copy. Hope my notes have helped.
