I did the same thing. I have the hp photosmart R817 camera and have learned to exploit the features - the sunset, portrait and landscapes are great assets when I want my ok photo skills to look great! 9  out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

Good afternoon

To get away from the " always in auto mode " try getting away from the creative modes also like moving the button to the flower-close up setting, night time setting, etc. These are really auto modes also. Go into the manual setting modes to really get away from the full auto modes and get creative in your mind not the camera's mind.

As a pro-sumer I also use the auto mode in certain accessions but my best works come from my mind and not the cameras mind. Once you get the hang of it you will see what other world lies out there for your photography
